Basic Copyright Principles for GPRC Instructors & Students

Canadian Copyright Law does not require a work to be registered or labelled as copyrighted for copyright protection to apply to that work.  In fact the reverse is true.

Any work (document, image, video, music, webpage, etc.) you encounter should be considered to be copyrighted unless there are reasonable indications that the work is not protected by copyrightStudents and Instructors may make limited copies of copyright-protected works where one or more of the following conditions apply:

  • Permission to copy the work is expressed in the work itself, is expressed where the work was found or is explicitly granted by the work's owner

  • Permission to copy has been acquired by a license or other agreement

  • The work is Open Access or in the Public Domain

  • The work is copied within the limits of GPRC's Copyright Policy

GPRC Library's Digital Production Technician  is the primary copyright support person for GPRC Students and Instructors.  The Digital Production technician can help Students and Instructors evaluate whether their intended use of a copyrighted work complies with license privileges or rights that are available to them.
