General Guidelines for Formatting

Always read the assignment instructions before formatting your paper.

Notice that the title and all of your class and personal information is centred on the page. 

Chicago does not normally use headings. Instead, create meaningful transition statements that help your essay flow smoothly. Talk to your instructor or consult your assignment instructions if headings are required for your paper. 

Note that the heading on this page is Bibliography, centred on the page and in normal font. 

  • Also note the page number.

There is no page number on your front page (select Different First Page before inserting page number to keep the front page blank). Put your last name a few spaces away from the page number, place them on the upper right hand side of the page.

  • The citations are double spaced just like the rest of the paper and are in a hanging indent. Watch the video below to see how to make the hanging indent.
